Modalities Help You Heal
Cryotherapy, commonly performed by way of ice baths, is a popular post-exercise recovery modality utilized by athletes and clinicians to reduce inflammation and speed recovery (Crystal, 2013).
Researchers have found a decrease in soreness when cryotherapy was used during recovery (Crystal, 2013).
Electrical stimulation (ES) is a noninvasive treatment modality that involves various stimuli delivered superficially using electrodes placed on the skin (Desantana, 2016).
These general stimulation parameters produce a diffuse inhibition of pain, likely to be mediated by descending pain control pathways (Desantana, 2016).

ABOUT
What Are Therapeutic Modalities?

A therapeutic modality is anything we can do to the body to assist in its healing process. There are many variations of therapeutic modalities which are used in physical therapy. Usage of modalities varies from state to state and guidelines must be followed for each specific state. Choosing the proper modality is based on each individual's need and should be decided based on an evaluation.

There are many types of modalities but some of the categories include mechanical, electromagnetic, and thermal. Mechanical would be something such as massage or manipulation of joints. Electromagnetic would consist of electric simulation or lasers. Lastly, thermal would include cryotherapy or thermotherapy.

How it Works
Cryotherapy
-
Reduces the perception of pain
-
Ice massage is often used for treatment
-
Can treat common sports injuries:
Electrical Stimulation
-
Electrical stimulation is used for sensory or motor effects
-
Types of modalities include: TENS, NMES/EMS, and MENS/LIS

Thermal
-
Hot packs may be applied to injuries
-
This helps to relax the tissue
-
This also helps to increase circulation
-
Provides pain relief
